_We are a Christian family with a small "homestead" located in
the beautiful northwest Florida Panhandle, where we raise quality
Holland Lops, Jersey Woolies, Netherlands Dwarfs & AFL's for show and pet. Last year, we added a pair of English Angoras, in hopes to learn to spin their wool. Rabbits are a wonderful way to get youth, especially younger children, involved in homesteading and 4H/FFA activities. They are small (compared to other livestock), don't require as much accommodations and food.
Our dairy goat herd includes the Nigerian Dwarf and Lamancha for milk production and conformation. Both are very gentle breeds with good milking abilities and high butter fat content.
We also keep a variety of chickens for laying (Buff Orpingtons and Rhode Island Red) but concentrate on raising the Standard Cochins, in blue, white, black and blue-splash varieties and Silkie Bantams in Buff and White.
Then there are our dogs, cats, turtle and parakeets. The Lord has blessed us with three wonderful children, Nate, Sarah & Samantha...our son has autism and keeps us challenged and on our toes! Between our kids, critters, family activities, milking (and my sewing/quilting)....we stay pretty darn busy!
Our goals are to teach our children to be more self-reliant, efficient, to appreciate what they make, grow and raise. Most importantly, to give thanks for all we've been blessed with. Many of these skills and time-honored traditions have been lost between generations, thus making it a learning experience for us all...and we must admit it has been trial and error. However, we are enjoying our journey and hope to learn many more skills to pass down to our children and future generations.
We are big supporters of 4H and FFA!
Please take note, we are not a rabbit mill and do not breed for the sole-purpose of "making money". Our foundation stock was researched and selected in regards to temperament , health and SOP (Standard of Perfection) from nationally competitive lines. We put A LOT of our time, love, sweat, money (sometimes tears too) into our animals and breed for quality, health and temperaments. and they are well taken care of ...spoiled actually :)
We are members of the American Rabbit Breeders Assoc. where our rabbitry is registered (ARBA #D734). We are also members of the Holland Lop Rabbit Specialty Club (HLRSC), National Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club (NJWRC), American Netherland Dwarf Rabbit Club, and the American Fuzzy Lop Club. Our Nigerian Dwarf herd is registered through Nigerian Dwarf Goat Assoc. (NDGA), American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) and the American Goat Society (AGS). They have also tested negative for CAE February 2012.
All of this helps to ensure we are raising and selling healthy animals, thus sales are priced accordingly.
My nana always told me "you get what you pay for!" The best, most honest guidance we can give you when selecting your rabbit is find a reputable breeder. ASK questions, seek recommendations, and do your OWN research prior to buying! You, as the buyer, need to be responsible and educate yourself before making big purchases.
We, at Boxwood Acres, welcome questions about our stock. :)
Check back often to see updated news, pictures and information.
We will be more than happy to answer any questions, so please feel free to contact us.
Be sure to check our "General Care", Showing, and Color Genetics pages under Rabbitry for lots of great rabbit info. :)
Thanks for stopping by and we hope you enjoy your tour of Boxwood Acres.
Thanks & God Bless,
The Bush Family
